“NYC braces for 3-5 inches of snow” read one of today’s headlines in the local newspaper. Really? Let the panic begin!

Well if you are brave enough to get out of the house this weekend, here are some events around town:

  1. Meditation with Ven. Thupten Phuntsok

    Join in for a morning meditation session with Ven. Thupten Phuntsok. The aim of meditation is to bring inner peace within our self in a positive and spiritual way. This can be a very nice, soothing way to start your weekend.

    When: January 21st, Sat. 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM

  2. Tavern Concert – String Fever

    The band features tight three and four part harmonies, award winning songwriting and tasteful soloing. Bluegrass is the heart of the group’s music along with many other influences such as country, folk, jazz and blues.

    Additionally, M. Bennett will be hosting “One Pot Wonders” dinners every Saturday evening at 5:30PM for Tavern Concert attendees. Reservations are necessary by calling (718)370-3835. The cost is no more than $25.

    When: January 21st, Sat. 7:30PM – 8:45PM and 9PM – 10:15PM.

  3. Wintry Fun

    Winter makes us excited for snow. If you’re looking for some fun, play in the “snow,” and create a craft to take home this weekend. The Wintry fun program is suitable for ages 4 to 8 with an adult chaperone. Registration and pre-payment required, call (718)370-3835.

    Tickets: $4 Greenbelt Conservancy members/ $6 non-members

  4. Health & Fitness at JCC

    Flash Mob Fitness

    Frank Moresh leads this week’s class in this fun, free, different kind of exercise experience every Sunday. For more information call (718)475-5210.

    2nd Annual Staten Island Slimdown

    The 2nd Staten Island Slim Down starts this weekend, offering free help to residents looking to lose weight and avoid the ailments associated with being overweight. The kickoff will include information on the 10-week program, health screenings and an appearance by Alfredo Dinten, a former contestant on The Biggest Loser and a Slim Down ambassador.

    When: January 22nd, Sun. 2PM- 5PM

  5. Up for Art – Tin Reliefs

    Celebrate the Chinese New Year by creating reliefs with Chinese motifs.

    When: January 21st and 22nd, Sat and Sun. at 1,2 and 3PM
    Location: 1000 Richmond Terrace – Children’s Museum
    Tickets: Free with admission

  6. Opening Reception: Staten Island, Remember When?

    Step back in time with stunning Staten Island scenes by watercolor painter, Fred Sklenar.

    When: January 21st, Sat 1PM – 3PM

  7. And if you don’t want to go far, get outside and make a snowman!
