This Weekend on Staten Island

Looks like it’s going to be a lovely fall weekend and below is a list of wonderful activities to enjoy with your loved ones. Get out and enjoy the weekend!

  1. 62nd Annual Fence Show & Musical Chairs Open Air Music Festival

    Staten Island Museum presents the 2nd longest running outdoor art show in New York City! The 62nd Annual Fence Show will be held on the front lawn of the beautiful & historic Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden.

    Come view, shop, and canoodle with artists, designers, and craftspeople of all stripes. This year along with the Fence Show, and the Food Trucks, Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble has put together a wonderful array of Music on stage from 12-4pm, this will without a doubt add to the day.

  2. 1776 Peace Conference Celebration

    Come down to the Conference House to see a reenactment of the famous peace conference held at the Conference House. Children’s activities, historic house tours, re-enactments, crafters, colonial dancing, colonial outdoor cooking, live music, and so much more! A fun-filled event for the whole family on the Great Lawn in Conference House Park.

  3. The Threads that Bind, Exploring the Sacred Traditions of Tibet and India

    As part of the Asian American Arts Alliance’s “Celebrating the Sacred Festival” the artist, Jayanthi Moorthy will present, Sacred Writings and Threads, an outdoor installation combining works on canvas, handwritten scrolls sourced from the community, and sacred threads from temples in India. The writings act as a a meditative tool while tying threads represent the bonding with loved ones.

    When: Saturday and Sunday, September 15 & 16, 1PM -5PM
    Location: Museum of Tibetan Art, 338 Lighthouse Avenue
    Tickets: $6 Adults/$4 students and seniors

  4. 39th Annual Greek Festival

    Enjoy the flavors, culture, and music of Greece! Fun for the whole family! Here’s a recap of my last year’s visit to the Big Fat Greek Festival. For more info: Call the church office at 718-494-0658.

  5. 3rd Annual Fig Fest

    Fig Fest is an impromptu celebration of the fruit. Revelers bring figs from their garden, samples of fig-baked goods or just their curious selves. Whoever brings the tastiest figs becomes the Fig King (regardless of whether or not you’re a man or woman) for the 2012 season!

  6. Archery

    Archery is a wonderful way to improve focus and develop patience. Trained Rangers will demonstrate the safe and proper way to draw a bow and shoot an arrow. Archery is a great way to build upper body strength!

    Families and children ages 8 years and older are welcome to participate.

    When: Saturday, September 15, 11AM – 1PM

  7. Crooke’s Point

    Walk and talk with Ellen Pratt as she visits the site of the National Park Service’s ongoing restoration. View the area clear cut and sprayed, and make observations of wildlife. Consider the possible impacts of proposed restoration and discuss alternate approaches to the maintenance of a healthy environment.

  8. Greenmarkets across Staten Island

    This weekend visit one of the three or all greenmarkets on Staten Island for farm-fresh produce! Get delicious, locally grown fruits and veggies.

    1. St. George Greenmarket, corner of Hyatt St. & St. Marks Place, 8MA – 2PM

      Set on a hill overlooking New York Harbor and the downtown Manhattan skyline, this market draws a dedicated following of neighborhood shoppers who line up each Saturday to get first dibs on the freshest seasonal fruit, produce, cheese, meat, seafood and baked goods.

    2. Staten Island Mall Greenmarket, 2655 Richmond Ave, parking lot, 9AM – 4PM
    3. Decker Farm, 435 Richmond Hill Rd, 9AM – 1PM

      The farm stand is open for business, stocking its shelves with organic fruits and vegetables harvested each day from its 11-acre field. This historic family farm has been operating since 1810. It is a unique and special part of Historic Richmond Town where centuries of American life are preserved and presented every day.

  9. Welcome Fall: Woodland Fairymaking Workshop

    The forest is home to wondrous creatures, some who are born from the imagination. Create your own woodland fairy or wizard to join you on your hike through the Greenbelt forest. Suitable for ages 7 and up with adult chaperone.

    Location: Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Avenue at Brielle Avenue
    Tickets: non- members: $8 per craft participant/$6 Greenbelt Conservancy members: Registration and pre-payment required.

  10. Freshkills Park Birding Tour

    Search for the birds of Freshkills Park along the site’s wetlands, creeks and meadows! This tour, like all our bi-monthly birding tours, will be held jointly by naturalists from the Staten Island Museum and members of the Freshkills Park development team. It will diverge from the normal tour route and will be traveled by both bus and foot. This tour is a great way to witness the Freshkills Park site as well as the diverse wildlife returning to the region. This event is free, but space is limited, and registration is required.   11. Irish Music Festival

    Enjoy music from The Willie Lynch Band, The Band of Rogues, The Jimmy Hawkins Band, and Pipe and Drum Bands. Food, beverages, kids activities by PartySmarty Entertainment, 50/50, & 300 Club. For the Benefit of The Society of St. Paul. Rain or Shine. For more information call (718)981-9567.

  13. Magnificent Mushrooms Up Close

    September is a wonderful time to look for these marvels of the forest. Meet at High Rock Park to learn all about the beautiful decomposers found throughout the Greenbelt. Use magnifiers and microscopes to take a closer look at these fascinating fungi, and learn basic mushroom identification. Then take a hike through the forest to see what is blooming. This program is geared for families with children ages 6 and up. Meet at the Nevada Ave parking lot. Registration required.
