Things to Do this Weekend and other Celebrations around town

It’s time to get back to the Beach and Celebrate! This summer weekend offers an array of fun activities for all ages, all over town. We hope you take some time this weekend to enjoy them:

  1. Sprinkler Fest

    Come and join in the free, fun-in-the sun event “ Sprinkler Fest” for children of all ages, hosted by the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden. “Sprinkler Fest” will feature dozens of open sprinklers for children to run, skip or jump through — providing, of course, that the weather cooperates — and there will also be a dunk tank for downing members of the Snug Harbor staff on the one-acre of South Meadow. Also at the fest free entertainment such as live music, puppeteers and workshops.

  2. NYC Parks Summer Movie Series

    Pack a picnic, grab a blanket, and gather up your family for an outdoor showing of ‘Kung Fu Panda 2.’

    When: Friday, August 17th, 8PM – 10PM
    Location: Cpl Thompson Park, Broadway and Henderson Avenue
    Tickets: Free

  3. Summer Stage Kids: Central Park Zoo’s Wildlife Theater

    Wildlife Theater is a Central Park Zoo-based theater company that inspires audiences to learn—and care—more about our natural world. W.T. performs their special interactive theater programs in the tri-state area for schools, community centers and hospitals.

    When: Friday, August 17th, 10:30AM – 11:30AM
    Location: Tappen Park, at the intersection of Canal St and Bay St

  4. Back to the Beach Celebrations

    The second and final “Back to the Beach” weekend of the summer will be held this weekend. A fireworks display is scheduled for 9 p.m. on Saturday, with a raindate of Sunday. Games, rides, vendors, food, and entertainment will be available both days of the celebration.

    When: Sat and Sun, August 18th and 19th. 12 Noon – 9PM
    Location: at the Midland Beach Sea Turtle Circle, located at Father Capodanno Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue

  5. Basic Canoeing

    Trained Urban Park Rangers will lead you on canoe adventures that range from the gentle waters of protected lakes, to the challenging open waters of rivers and bays. During Urban Park Ranger canoe programs, you can go from novice to expert in one just one summer!
    This particular program is of basic intensity. It is great for all skill levels, including children 8 years and older.

    Location: Willowbrook Park, entrances at Richmond Ave., Victory Blvd., Ashworth Ave., and Forest Hill Rd.

  6. Staten Idol

    Come and show us that Staten Island has talent. You can sing or dance individually or in a group. All acts are welcome to our talent showcase. Please register by calling the center (718) 816-5558.

  7. Nature of Art: Summer Adult Art Workshop

    Charcoal:
    Explore the history and characteristics of this ancient medium known as “Black Magic”. Learn to achieve spectacular effects and lifelike spontaneous results in your work by using proper tonal assessment as we practice negative space drawing.

    When: Saturday, August 18th, 11AM – 1PM

  8. Guided Meditation with Thupten Phuntsok
    Join for a guided meditation class on Saturday mornings. The session is led by the Ven. Thupten Phuntsok, and lasts for one hour.

    When: Saturday, August 18th, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
    Location: Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, 338 Lighthouse Avenue
    Tickets: $12/$10 for members

  9. Greenmarkets across Staten IslandThis weekend visit one of the three or all greenmarkets on Staten Island for farm-fresh produce! Get delicious, locally grown fruits and veggies.When: August 11th, Saturday

  10. Fishing

    Mastering any new skill requires practice and patience. Fishing programs help develop these skills while connecting you with nature. Our experienced Rangers teach the ethics of fishing and the ecology of our waterways on every fishing program.

    When: Sunday, August 19th, 11AM – 1PM
    Location: Clove Lakes Park, Parking area west of Park Drive and Clove Road

  11. Kayak Staten Island
    Kayak Staten Island – is an organization providing free kayaking for the public. They provide the use of sit-on-top kayaks, life-jackets and paddles. Offering paddling tips and launch/land assistance. Experienced kayakers are in the water for further assistance.

    When: Sunday, August 19th, 12PM – 4PM
    Location: located on South Beach at the end of the Boardwalk in Parking Lot #1.
    Tickets: Free

  12. Zumba at Great Kills Park

    Zumba with instructors Barbara Magill and Gina Viola. The free cardio dance classes are based on Latin and international music. For more information call 718-980-6130
