Things To Do This Weekend

Here’s a list of wonderful things to do around town this weekend in Staten Island. Take your friends and family to visit museum exhibits, musicals, children events and more. Spend some quality time with the ones you love.

  1. Wagner College Theatre

    Hollmann & Kotis’s Urinetown the Musical – This 2001 Tony Award winning musical satirizes megacorporations, in this case one that regulates the most basic aspect of everyday life–water.   2. Staten Island Museum History Center

    Artist Talk with Fred Sklenar– Take a stroll back in time with artist Fred Sklenar at his new exhibition: Staten Island, Remember When?

  3. 7 by 7: 7 Deadly Sinful Shorts

    Seven Deadly Sins – Seven original short plays written by seven Staten Island playwrights, each exploring one of the seven deadly sins. The three-year-old writers group is heading for the dark side, hoping for large and enthusiastic audiences.

  4. Protectors of Pine Oak Woods

    Wintering Birds at Great Kills Park – We’ll proceed to the tidal mud flats and other sites in the park. We’ll identify waterfowl in the bay and in the sheltered boat basin. We’ll also look for snow bunting and horned lark. Raptors can often be found. Bring binoculars & dress warmly! Call Howie Fisher at (718)981-4002.

    Conference House Beach: A Blend of Past and Present – Conference House Park – where history stretches back thousands of years with the Lenape people and Dutch and English habitation.   5. Garibaldi-Meucci Museum

    Welcome to Venice Carnival 2012: The Colors of Venice & Burano – A Celebration of the Artistic Heritage, Architecture, Colors and Mystery of Venice & Burano through the Digital Photography/Images of Fritz (Steven) Weiss. The transformation from the original photographs to the final digital images has been a two year project. Among the challenges working on this series was the objective to present the infinite textures and vibrant colors of the Italian experience, layered in centuries of classical history, culture and art.

  6. Winter Evergreen Tree Walk

    Meet at the Glass House to join Snug Harbor Botanical Garden Horticultural Director Greg Lord and city Parks Department Arborist John Kilcullen for a winter tree walk on the grounds of historic Snug Harbor Cultural Center. Learn about both conifer trees and broad leaf evergreens that brighten up the Snug Harbor Campus during the winter. Participants must be at least 14 years of age.   7. The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art

    Partner Yoga – Sean McCann and Lauren Tacconi will present this workshop. Connect deeper to your work out, your partner and to your sense of peace with partner yoga. Great for couples, friends and family; partner yoga encourages not only individual perseverance but also joint appreciation and improved communication.     Exhibit Opening Lhasa on the Hudson – an exhibit of large format portrait photos by Meg Whitlock. The project focuses on the lives of Tibetan Families living in exile in New York City. For more information call (718)987-3500.

  8. Staten Island OutLOUD – Nature Treasure Hunt

    The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Hunt for Tom & Huck’s lost treasure! Tom & Huck found a chest full of gold coins – but when it vanished, they searched far & wide for it! Join Staten Island OutLOUD to hunt for “nuggets of knowledge” on the trails near the Greenbelt Nature Center. You may find a gold coin or two! Our walk will be easy, suitable for all ages but dress warm! Afterwards, come inside & gather around the fireplace to share a short reading from Tom & Huck’s adventure.

  9. Staten Island Athletic Club Fun Run

    Join a 3 mile fun run being held on Saturdays in February and March at Clove Lakes Park. This year, the SIAC Fun Run Cart will be available for your excess clothing. The new SIAC Coffee Crate will be there for your hot beverage pleasure. Celebrate at the finish line with water, coffee and refreshments. For more information call (718) 807-1511.

  10. Forest Tunes with Patrick Raftery

  11. Storytelling
    Connect children with nature to encourage active exploration of the natural world. Children who spend time outdoors develop strong imaginations and learn to socialize better with others. Urban Park Rangers are role models who encourage children to let their imaginations run wild in a safe, supportive atmosphere.

    Saturday’s Tots – Spend quality time playing, singing, drawing and listening to stories.

  13. Dinosaurs and More

    Join dinosaur enthusiast, Richie Mirissis, as he presents some amazing fossils, three-dimensional models, and memorabilia from his vast collection. Make a clay fossil mold with the help of our knowledgeable volunteers. Pre-registration not required.

  14. Theater Classes for children at Sundog Theatre

    Beginning this weekend, the Sundog Theatre is offering a theater class for children ages 9 to 14 that will help bring them out of their shells. “This program is perfect for the young person who is timid or has a hard time talking in public,” said Sundog executive director Susan Fenley of the Musical Theatre Kids classes, which will include both vocal and movement exercises to train children to freely express themselves.
